Entrecasteaux Sevens Tournament 26 Sept 2009
Eight teams participated in the day-long tournament, where games of one-hour were played on the main pitch and the adjacent football pitch, laid with a Flicx mat. Visiting teams were Greens Norton, who fielded two teams, Zambuca Tigers and Stage CC. Local teams were Riviera CC, Mediterranean CC and the hosts, ECC who also fielded two teams.
The draw saw ECC I, Med CC, Greens I and Stage in League A, whilst Riviera, Greens II, EEC II and Zambuca contested League B. The format was seven-a-side and six overs per innings.
In League A, the defending champions, ECC I, got off to a good start defeating Greens I, but that was the end of their success, losing later to the fast-developing Med CC team as well as newcomers, Stage CC. Med went on mark up a second victory over Greens I, but succumbed to Stage, who topped the table with three victories – their star batsman, Sunny, scoring 54 in one match to take the title of Best Batsman for the day.
In League B, last year's beaten finalists, Riviera CC also notched up three victories to progress to the Final with under strength Zambuca propping up the table.
In the Final Riviera batted first, but soon lost star batsman Phil Martin, who had set a high score of 48 earlier in the day, to a sharp stumping. The remaining batsmen rallied and set a target of 56 with Andy Bristow hitting 43. With star batsman, Sunny injured and requiring a runner, the Riviera total looked a fair challenge, but Sunny and Asif rose to the challenge and came home with one over to spare for the loss of just one wicket. Well done, Stage CC !
As we all know, what happens on the cricket pitch is only half the story. A cricket tournament or a club does not function without its band of unsung heroes – groundsmen, scorers, umpires and caterers etc. At the end of the day all the players sat down to a splendid meal in the Espace Culturel and took time to acknowledge the contribution of these non-playing heroes of the game.
Sunday 13th September 2009 Entrecasteaux v Pagets Marauders Another fine day was had by all in sunny/cloudy conditions with a light breeze. This match was a little unusual or to say not our normal practice of playing as it was a timed match. This means that the first innings is played to a level reaching a decloration or all out then leaving the second inning team to chace the total but also given a minimum of 20 over from a pre set point in time. I hope that makes it clear (probably not). Following the Match we were all invited back to a BBQ at Mr Alan And Mrs Tara Elliots. On behalf of the ECC We would like to thank very much for a wonderfull evening. The first innings was played by the Marauders and the results are as follows:
