Match Report, Entrecasteaux CC vs Hammer Bottom Butsers CC

Sunday 1 st May 2011

Despite inclement weather forecasts the scene was set for a wonderful day of cricket and when the visitors raised their flag it unfurled proudly in the stiff breeze. That the HBBCC players had unfurled themselves from their many modes of transport in a rather more genteel fashion gave their hosts their first insight – there was no doubt that HBBCC's fifth overseas tour ‘Les Derrieres en France – Encore!' – was being enjoyed by the said touring party.

That Entrecasteaux's XI were already in the field hurling the ball harder and harder at each other (due to the somewhat tardy and poorly coordinated arrival of the mini buses) and with talk of some fit Sri Lankan's and a member of the French national squad (for his age) playing - the HBBCC players were rubbing their eyes. Toss made, Entrecasteaux were to bat.

Entrecasteaux's innings was all about one man. Robin Murphy opened the batting and retired with his score on 100 in the 32nd over when the total was 222 for 5 wickets. It had been a lesson in mastery, grace and control, against a bowling attack which never really threatened but from whom runs were difficult to score. His retirement caused a mass pitch invasion by his adoring fan who was dressed far too appropriately for such an occasion! Entrecasteaux concluded their innings in the 35 th over on 242 with contributions from Fife (44), Slack (22), Chaminda (21), Shiran (20) and Gregory (17).

An excellent lunch organized by Jane Bartlett and Ann Mitchem with help from Pam Mackintosh and Cate Biddle and many others, put the fight back into the bellies of our shell shocked visitors. Despite this there was much talk of HBBCC players, somewhat like Lillee and Thompson at Headingley in 1981, ‘laying' their total at 100 runs.

This only encouraged Entrecasteaux's opening bowlers. Clifford Gregory had a particularly fine spell claiming 5 overs , 3 maidens(1 wkt maiden), 8 runs, 2 wickets. A mature and increasingly reliable performance only surprising in that he was not returned for a second spell. This had brought Dick White to the crease who proved to be HBBCC's top scorer with 27 runs. Unfortunately he was not very ably assisted with only Nick Hardie (20) and James Blake (12 n.o.) getting into double figures.

David Coates, a welcome reappearance, had come on from the football pitch end for an over of left arm leg breaks, but immediately strained a muscle whilst fielding and had to be replaced by Chaminda.

Wickets kept falling with some tight and accurate contributions from Anthony Slack (4 -0 -7 -2), Chaminda (6-1-16-1) and Dight Everton (5-1-14-3), including 2 caught behind the wicket by Banda Uddika in the same over, leaving the visitors at 51 for 7 in the 21 st over.

Surely we would have an early cup of tea and get away home but some stout and dogged batting from David Graham (9) and James Blake made the home team serve their time out in the field. HBBCC had scored 104 runs (so had the bet been layed they would have lost) for the loss of 9 wickets. Entrecasteaux had hammered them - winning by a margin of 138 runs but perhaps there was a victory of some sorts for the visitors.

Entrecasteaux must learn to apply pressure, not once did we see a second or third slip, a silly mid on or a short leg, this was an opportunity to crowd the bat - cricket is a game where if you give an inch a mile can be taken – that perhaps is one of its beauties.

Dick White – MVP – 27 runs, and 5-0-27-3

Match report, Entrecasteaux CC vs No Hope CC, Sunday 24th April 2011

Threatening clouds greeted those who turned up on time for this early start against an opposition who had returned for a second bite of the cherry. ECC captain duly made the right call and decided to bat.

Siran opened the batting  but was to succumb to the first ball of the second over which kept straight and was able to find its mark due to no shot being offered. This brought Matt Brown to the crease who had showed so much promise last year. Sadly there was no evidence of a hangover – like Shiran he too fell to a short ball outside off stump which flicked his bat as it went through to a startled first slip.

ECC were reeling, enter one Danny Danush, who came with instructions to steady the ship. After watching the ball for an over he proceeded to smite 4 fours in consecutive balls – ‘Instructions, what instructions, I’ll play my game!’ he said at the next end of over conference.

Inspired by Danush’s fine example Fife took up in the same vein only to top edge his third attempt at a 4 and for the ball to find itself lodged in the hands of a short third man – out for 15.

Dight Everton, who had only appeared minutes before, was immediately sent into bat. This costly error saw Everton’s cameo role only last 2 balls and 1 minute. Phil Batchelor had been joined by Shalana after Danush had been caught with a commendable 23 runs to his name. Shalana’s all too brief appearance had rendered Roshan to the stumps and he and Batchelor made a match winning partnership of 53 runs – built on straight and intelligent batting, taking singles whenever possible and boundaries too, if they were on offer.

Chaminda joined Batchelor to add another 50 partnership before they were both dismissed by Kieran, Batchelor for 44 runs and Chaminda for 39 runs. Cliff Gregory and Martin Hopewell were expected to see out the final 5 overs and add a conservative 30 runs to take Entrecasteaux to the 200 mark but they had no sooner joined forces on the crease when a disastrous call by Gregory left Hopewell stranded out of his ground without a hope. Consequently Hopewell’s resistance against the No Hope CC had proved hopeless!

Entrecasteaux had been dismissed for 177 runs and in taking to the field wondered whether their total would be sufficient. Roshan and Gregory opened the bowling and kept the runs from being easily scored. However opening batsmen Aspden and Rost were steadily building a score. After 7 overs and 22 runs scored Roshan was forced to try another source of inspiration with both Batchelor and Chaminda coming into the attack.

But it was some very sharp fielding by Gregory at mid on who smashed over the stumps with a direct hit from 3 yards which brought the opening partnership of 59 to a close and Aspden was returned to the pavilion with a score of 19, all singles!

If it had not been Dight Everton’s day with the bat it most certainly was with the ball. In a devastating spell of accurate and difficult bowling he took a further 3 wickets for just 31 runs in his allotted 7 overs. No Hope’s Rost had been Everton’s first victim with umpire Rod Joyce having no hesitation in raising his finger when asked the question. He had made 36 and was joined in the batting role of honours by Kieran (34) and Byers (32).

Roshan, Fife and Gregory also claimed wickets but time had run out for the visitors when their score was 9 runs short of the requisite number. It could have gone either way and with Entrecasreaux haemorrhaging singles as No Hope’s innings was built it did seem likely at one stage that the visitors might make the score.

No mention of the day could go without reference to No Hope’s Kara Toleman who with 6 overs for 31 runs and a total of 16 with the bat was in serious consideration for ‘man’ of the match award. On hearing this Phil Batchelor immediately and generously offered himself as the prize but the authorities thought wiser of this notion and the prize was awarded to  Alec!

Entrecasteaux won the match by 9 runs.

Special thanks to Jane Bartlett, Ann Mitchem and Cate Biddle for organizing an excellent lunch. Many thanks to Rod Wallace and Maurice Mitchem for umpiring and to Bob Bartlett for scoring.

Match report, ECC vs Beausoleil CC, Sunday 17th April 2011

The first competitive game against a team who are rapidly becoming a strong force in the south east of France. The home team decided to take no chances and fielded a strong team, albeit one somewhat lacking in match fitness, for this 35 over game in conditions that were warm and pleasant.

Beausoleil were looking to make a big score but with captain and vice captain, Roshan Perera and Cliff Gregory, taking the new ball and completing their 7 overs each for a total of just 37 runs, with the loss of 4 wickets, this task was always going to be difficult.

Anthony Slack and Phil Batchelor continued the relentless pressure and after another 8 overs Beausoleil had been reduced to the loss of 7 wickets with 58 on the scoreboard. Only Jas and Tyron had managed to creep into double figure scores and so it was left to Dight Everton and Shalana to knock the final wickets over - Beausoleil had amassed a paltry 70 runs in just 25.4 overs.

Entrecasteaux's fine bowling performance had been matched with some keen and tight fielding - including one run out - it was an out all round excellent performance in the field against a renowned batting side.

It was now left to Entrecasteaux's batsmen to tame the Beausoleil attack. The dependable Robin Murphy opened the batting with the captain's rarely seen brother Shiran, who despite his lack of practice smote a comfortable 20 before being forced to return to the pavilion by the said elder sibling. Murphy, equally impressive, was likewise returned after an unbeaten 25.

Enter one Banda Uddika whose cameo role of 12 runs, combined with some rather wide Beausoleil  bowling, took the home team to a comfortable victory in just 13.3 overs.

Match result - Entrecasteaux won by 8 wickets.

Apologies received: Len Terry(President), Edward Farrant, Andrew Macaulay, Eddie Bishop, Chris Cope, Julian Pike, David Coates, Ian Stewart, Simon Eveleigh

Rod Joyce presented the President’s report in the President’s absence. He thanked the community of Entrecasteaux and the Marie for their continued support of the club. He also thanked the members, both playing and non playing members, particularly the lady members for their excellent work with both fund raising and catering .

He also thanked Siddalls, the clubs sponsor, for their continued support of Entrecasteaux CC.

Roshan Perera, club captain, presented his report of the 2010 season. An excellent year for the club in terms of results and performances culminating in Entrecasteaux winning the 7’s tournament. He thanked Cliff Gregory for his support and advice as club vice captain. He also thanked playing members and non playing members for their support. He hoped to see new members coming into the club.

Rod Joyce presented the Treasurer’s report which showed the club had gross receipts of 8,6k euros and gross expenditure of 6,0k euros. A surplus of 2,5k euros was therefore carried forward leaving the club with funds of 10,4k at the end of December 2010. The budget projected for 2011 showed forecast receipts of 4,3k euros and forecast expenditure of 8,5k euros which would leave a deficit of 4,2k euros. These accounts and budget were proposed to be accepted by the club. Maurice Mitchem seconded the proposal and the meeting accepted the accounts and budget.

Mrs Ann Mitchem and Mrs Elaine Joyce resigned as members of the committee.  Rod Joyce resigned as club secretary. It was proposed and seconded that Rod Joyce would become Treasurer to the club and Andy Fife would become the Secretary. It was further proposed that the club captain and vice captain be ex officio members of the committee. Mrs Jackie Axam will take over from Ann Mitchem as fixtures secretary. The meeting approved these appointments.

2011 committee members are therefore as follows:

Mr Len Terry – President

Mr Rod Joyce – Treasurer

Mr Andy Fife – Secretary

Mr Anthony Slack and Mrs Yvonne Slack

Mr Ian Mackintosh

Mr Ivan Linhart

Mr Roshan Perera – club captain

Mr Clifford Gregory – club vice captain

Andy Fife reported on the plans for 2011 – namely that c2,0k had had to be spent on pitch improvements: repair of damage caused by sanglier and the erection of a new electric fence. He also reported that the tour to England had been cancelled.

Any other business: Andy Fife, on behalf of the club thanked Mrs Elaine Joyce for her many years of support to the club as Treasurer to the club. He further thanked Mrs Ann Mitchem for her work as fixtures secretary – members warmly approved this sentiment. He also thanked Jackie Axam, Cyril Marinari, Ian Mackintosh, Rose (Jackie’s mum) and Albert (?) for their efforts in preparing the pitch for the 2011 season.

Mr Ian Mackintosh reported that the Marie have given permission for the erection of a small stand to provide shading for spectators. He  also reported that the club had been approached by Strathclyde University for a chapter on the club to be included in a forthcoming book they are writing. Mrs Margaret Stone warned the club must maintain the right of final approval of what would be written about the club.

Andy Fife said the most pressing issue for the club was to find adequate and immediate storage for club equipment. After many years of looking after, storing and ferrying the equipment to and from the ground Maurice Mitchem wants to hand this responsibility over to A.N. Other. Mrs Patsy Hopewell said she had talked to the Mare about this issue and the Mare was considering what might be done. Dight Everton suggested storage in a container to be kept on the ground but could be removed at the end of the season. Mrs Margaret Stone suggested we might approach Jacky Panshaw(?) to see whether we might keep such a container on his land. Mrs Patsy Hopewell is to ask Jacky whether this might be possible.

Roshan Perera proposed the club should try to find a weekend fixture either in Italy or south west France as a result of the tour to England being cancelled. He will talk with Ann Mitchem and Andy Fife to see if such a tour can be organized.

With no other business Rod Joyce closed the meeting.

20/10/2010

We have reached the end of our 2010 season and what a good year it has been!

In total we played 16 proper matches (4 losses) and 3 social games. But these figures do not tell the whole story.

  • We overcame the loss of our caravan and ground equipment thanks to members' hard work and generous donations.
  • We undertook a successful weekend tour to Geneva
  • We hosted probably the most successful SEVENS tournament in its seven year history
  • We had more players available than required for most matches towards the end of the season
  • We still have a hard core of just a few members who do virtually all that makes cricket happen at Entrecasteaux – more volunteers are needed.

For the record:

22 August July v Beausoleil CC - Loss for ECC

A real pleasure for us to host BCC for their first ever competitive fixture. The team comprises capable Sri Lankan cricketers from a town just beyond Monaco. ECC batted first and Andy Fife and Mathew Brown got the innings off to a fine start with a stand of 104, but the visitors then kept the score in check with some tight bowling, restricting ECC to 165-6 off 35 overs, In reply, BCC batted steadily and always had the required total well in their sights, achieving it for 7 wickets with 5 overs left.

29 August v Gamecox - Win for ECC

Fortunately, ECC were able to lend the visitors 3 players and with Paul Brown amongst these, it almost proved our undoing! ECC batted first and amassed a very healthy 243-4 off 35 overs (Robin 66, Dight 76no). The visitors lost early cheap wickets until Paul (118) and J Orvis (70no) came to the crease for a stand of almost 200. The ECC total proved just enough, however, Gamecox making 236-4.

5 Sept v Spye Park - Win for ECC

The first-time visitors proved not to have the fire-power against a very strong ECC team. Spye batted first, but found it difficult to advance the score against quality bowling, finishing on 143-8 off 35 overs. In reply, ECC eased past the winning post with 6 wickets and 19 overs in hand.

12 Sept v Provence – Win for ECC

Seeking to redress a defeat earlier in the season, ECC fielded a very strong team and overwhelmed the visitors from Aix. Provence batted first and Cliff, Phil and Robin bowled well and restricted the total to 101 all out off 29 overs. ECC easily reached the total in 20 overs for the loss of five wickets.

19 Sept v Beausoleil – Win for ECC

Again seeking to redress a defeat earlier in the season, ECC turned out a strong eleven. Batting first, ECC made 204-7 of 35 overs with Anthony, Uddika, Roshan and Chaminda all making healthy contributions. The ECC bowling attack proved too strong for the visitors who were all out for 122 in 26 overs; Roshan 4-23, Chaminda 2-7.

The match this Sunday 27th June has been cancelled by Riviera

21/06/10

Dear ECC members & Friends,

The devastating floods in our region of the Var have taken their toll of your cricket club. Thankfully, I have heard of no members or friends being injured or worse, but some have had to contend with flooded houses, gardens and great inconvenience.

You will be aware that our faithful old caravan with all the match-day equipment was stored just outside the village - unfortunately, quite close to the river. The caravan was carried away by the floods and completely destroyed along with all its contents. We are assessing the value of our loss (uninsured) and expect it to be in the region of E3,000-E4,000. We are writing to the MCC in the hope of some support, as they played against us here in 2005.

Fortunately, Maurice keeps the basic playing equipment at home, so we are able to keep to our planned schedule of games - see below.

Also the new mat, recently purchased, is safe and sound at Rod's home - a work party will lay it soon.

This is not a plea for members to give us further finances - at this stage.

BUT it would be good if past members/others who subscriptions are outstanding for 2010 could show solidarity with their club by renewing their subs - membership form attached.

Upcoming home match schedule:

27 June    v Riviera
4   July     v Demijohns (UK)
11 July     v Provence (Aix)
Best regards

Rod Joyce
Sec

13 June v Med CC – Win for ECC

We were able to lend our depleted young local team some players to make an 8-a-side game. ECC made 136, while Med CC responded with 104.

6 June v Riviera – Win for ECC

Our annual visit to St Vallier to play our under-strength local rivals saw the hosts reach 156-9 off 30 overs with Patil making 56 – Roshan, Cliff and Chaminda taking 2 wickets apiece. In reply ECC reached this total four just 4 wickets and 3 overs to spare – Robin and Rosh both making 50s

29/30 May v Geneva XI Stars - Win for ECC (Geneva Tour)

Our 2010 tour saw 11 players and an umpire enjoy a good weekend's cricket in Geneva, very well organised an hosted by the Geneva XI Stars, who have only been in existence for 3/4 years. In the main 40 over game on Saturday, Geneva XI Stars batted first and made 168 all out with 2 overs left. It was good fielding and sharp catching (Andy, Rod, Uddi, Phil and Rosh – no catches dropped) that made the difference and the hosts were always struggling to build a total until free-hitting Ashwin made an unbeaten 54 at the end of the innings. Antony (3), Cliff (3) and Phil (2) were the main wicket-takers. In reply, Anthony (52 ret) and Chaminda (52) built the core of the ECC winning total with only 4 wickets lost. Sunday was a wet day, but both teams struggled through a 15 over bash with hosts claiming victory this time.

Sun 4 April v No Hop XI

No Hope XI had visited for our first fixture of 2009 and Entrecasteaux were easy winners on that occasion. How the tables were turned for the 2010 season opener! It must have been with too much complacency that the Entrecasteaux team, including nearly all regular first-teamers, took to the field, having put No Hope XI in to bat. The bowling was very rusty and at least half a dozen catches went down as the visitors compiled 160 runs. This total would not normally have been a big challenge for our boys, but they seem to have forgotten that they had not donned the pads since the end of last season and that it was necessary to get the eye in again. Needless to say that early wickets fell rapidly to over-ambitious shots and in what seemed like the blink of an eye, Entrecasteaux were all out for 60, and left licking their wounds in dismay.

Sun 11 April Intra-Squad Friendly

A good turn-out of twenty-two mostly able-bodied players enjoyed a good practice match and the first-teamers amongst them proved that they had learned their lesson from the week before with some solid performances with bat and ball and in the field.

The AGM was held in the lunch break with Roshan Perera confirmed as club captain and Cliff Gregory as his deputy.

Sun 2 May Seniors, Ladies and Juniors Day

Despite unpromising weather seventeen members turned our for a most enjoyable double-wicket tournament. No fewer than five of the eight pairings were from the same family, which made for extra enjoyment, as did the presence of our indefatigable senior member, Andrew Packard, a regular at these events. Andy Fife and Andrew Macaulay ran out winners.

Dear ECC members and friends

The new season is about to begin and preparations are well advanced. The first game will be against No Hope CC from England on Sunday 4 April, followed by the usual season opener of the Intra-Squad Friendly and AGM on Sunday 11 April. Players wishing to participate in these two games should respond to me as soon as possible; it is likely that we will have too many for the first game, but anyone omitted that day will definitely be included for the next proper game against Mediterranean CC on 18 April.

Your committee met a couple of days ago and there was optimism about the season ahead with the nearly full list of fixtures through to early October (see attached). However, there was concern that not enough member volunteers were coming forward to carry out the many tasks that make cricket happen at Entrecasteaux; there continues to be the same group of familiar faces each season and they don't get any younger! So a priority for this season is to recruit more members to get involved, share the workload and provide for succession in the many seasons ahead. Where can you help? The list is long, but immediate help is needed in pitch management, catering, caravan maintenance and movement, club admin, umpiring/scoring etc -not every week, if you can help out on just a few match days during the season, that would be greatly appreciated - just have word with a member of the committee and see what you can do for your club.

The continuing success of the Club depends on its members, whether they are first-team players, occasional players, groundsmen, scorers, umpires, organisers, caterers, fundraisers, supporters or benefactors. Therefore, we rely on your membership and look forward to you joining us for the 2010 season. I attach a 2010 Membership form. Please send a completed copy to my home address (on the form), with a cheque made out to Entrecasteaux Cricket Club.

A separate Email will be sent shortly to all 2009 members with the papers for the AGM on 11th April

Please note the club's website address has changed to: entrecasteauxcc.eu

Looking forward to seeing you at the ground during the season

Rod Joyce
Secretary

Message from Club Secretary:

Dear Members & Friends

I wish this could have been a cheerful note to start the new year, but as we all now know we lost Jacquie Terry just before Christmas and the grief has pervaded the whole club.
Len has asked me to thank you all for your messages and kind thoughts.

Our cricket season gets underway on 4th April against the No Hope XI visiting again from the UK. This is an unusual start to the season as we are holding our usual season-opening Intersquad Friendly and AGM on the following Sunday 11 April; a day when all can play and join in the fun. Maurice and Ann have done a great job in getting a good fixture list together - see Fixtures page on our site and remember it is regularly updated on the club website ( www.entrecasteauxcc.eu ), thanks to Thomas.

Elaine and I will be away from mid-Jan to mid-Mar, so there will be no more communication from myself before then - that's when I'll be chasing you for your subscriptions!

In the meantime, get fit for the new season
